Proverbs 15:22
“Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.”
No one sets out to fail but this verse highlights one reason why some plans fail.
It is implied that I solicit this counsel and don’t just wait for it to come my way. I look for and find people who are:
1. willing to help me and
2. who are ahead of me.
An obvious place to start is with godly parents:
Proverbs 1:8
“Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.”
Few people will ever be more invested in me than my parents. Friends may be willing to offer advice but not with the same life long commitment as a parent.
The Apostle Paul, as well as Peter and John, described themselves as spiritual fathers to those they were discipling….
I Corinthians 4:14-15
“My beloved children, for though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel.”
A spiritual father is one who
– loves and follows Christ
– loves and invests in me
Great place to start when seeking godly counsel.
Question: Who is your current ‘spiritual father’?
