Proverbs Twenty-two

Proverbs 22:6

“Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it.”

What does it mean to train?

– to teach so as to make fit, qualified, or proficient; to form by instruction, drill and discipline; to develop or form habits.

This training is about more than personal hygiene and punctuality, it is ‘the way he should go’. This implies a dedicated direction over a long period of time that is reinforced up close and in person in the home.

This type of training is about a definite ‘trajectory’.

It begins with dedication to a direction, includes years of modeling, much heartfelt correction, and introducing and reinforcing that God longs to have a relationship with the child.

The ‘way he should go’ does include ‘go’. The child is not trained to stay but to go. This proverb states that a dedicated trajectory will certainly lead to a long term successful launch.

Prayer.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the privilege of being a father and grandfather. Now give me grace to step into my role in setting the trajectory and launching my children and my grandchildren. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen.
