Proverbs Twenty-Three

Proverbs 23:31

“Do not look at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup and goes down smoothly.”

The Teacher acknowledges that there is something attractive about wine, and so a warning to be careful.

Chapter 23 is unusual as it closes with seven verses all on alcohol consumption….

Too much wine or mixed drink (v 30) brings (v 29):

– woe

– sorrow

– strife

– complaining

– wounds

– bloodshot eyes

To reinforce his warning he mentions these additional consequences (v 32-33)

– it bites like a snake

– it stings like a viper

– you’ll see strange things

– you’ll say absurd things

Next is the list of benefits of wine and mixed drink:

Oh, there are no benefits to consuming alcohol, there are only dangers. Maybe it is time for godly men who influence others to pause and consider the many dangers and zero benefits of consuming alcohol.

Heavenly Father, give me grace today to pause and consider my habits in general, including alcohol, and to make adjustments that honor You, serve other people and advance Your Kingdom. In Jesus Name, Amen.
