City on a Hill

Psalm 121:1

“I lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from?”

First, the psalmist recognizes that he ‘needs help’. The psalm is likely written for the journey up the hill of Mt Zion to the city of Jerusalem. The journey is ‘uphill’ and causes the traveler to ‘look up’.

Much of life is ‘uphill’. Challenges are followed by struggles which are accompanied by trials.

Like the hill to Jerusalem, these challenges, struggles and trials cause me to ‘look up’ with a recognition that I am in need of help.

The alternative is to keep my head down and focus on my path and make my own way. This keep your head down American self reliance can discard the need for help that God intends for me to sense. He wants me to ask the question, “Where does my help come from?”
