Genesis 50:20

“You tried to harm me, but God made it turn out for the best, so that he could save all these people, as he is now doing.” (CEV)

Joseph’s brothers were rightly worried that now that their dad had passed away – their brother Joseph would take his sweet revenge. But Joseph spoke the truth:

– ‘you tried to harm me’ – or ‘you meant evil against me’ (ESV, NASB). 

There is no sugar coating what these brothers did. They were jealous and self serving and evil. 

And then we have Potiphar’s wife – who was a jealous, angry, lying and a lust filled adulteress. She thought only of herself and she meant evil against Joseph. 

And finally we have the cupbearer who was in prison when he was blessed by Joseph. Yet he too was self serving and self absorbed and he ignored Joseph’s simple request and completely forgot him in the dungeon prison for a full two years. 

Yet in all of this, “God made it turn out for the best” – or “God meant it for good”.  

None of the brothers or Potiphar’s wife or the cupbearer meant any good for Joseph. No. No. No. They were all about themselves. Yet God was “in control”.  

The same God of the OT is the same God of the NT and is the same God of today and tomorrow and for Him we know this to be true…

“We know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭28‬
