II Timothy 2:2
“The things that you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.”
So what are ‘these things’ that Paul shared that Timothy would have heard in the presence of many witnesses? Paul is clearly referencing the core teachings that Timothy heard over and over in their travels together.
An example would be
Acts 17:1-3
“Now when they had traveled through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. And according to Paul’s custom, he went to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, explaining and giving evidence that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you is the Christ.””
This was the ‘custom’ or pattern of ministry for Paul. He shared the Scriptures and reasoned, explained and gave evidence that Jesus was the Christ. Timothy would see this over and over again. He would see it in Corinth as well…
I Corinthians 15:3-4
“For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,”
The Gospel message of Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection are ‘these things’ that Paul shared and that Timothy heard over and over again.
For over 2,000 years there has been many different things taught here and there – but the one thing, the greatest of all the teaching is the Gospel. For it is the gift of God to a sinful world to lead us (sinners) to salvation. thanks be to God of Father in heaven, for His love and mercy on us, through His only Son Jesus the Christ. 🙏❤️🙏
