Genesis 2:18a “Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone;”
The man, Adam, had a great relationship with God that was not yet damaged by the rebellion of sin. He also had what looked to be fulfilling work – cultivating and keeping the garden. But God Himself declared that a perfect relationship with Him and fulfilling work was not good enough. The man was isolated, alone and lacked companionship – and this was ‘not good’. So…
Genesis 2:18b; “I will make him a helper who is just right for him.”
God saw that something was lacking and so He intervened and He made it right. There is no indication at this point that Adam knew that anything was missing. He was seemingly content being a friend of God and cultivating and keeping the garden; but God knew that there was something even better.
