The First Christmas – Gabriel III

Gabriel’s declaration that Zechariah and Elizabeth were to have a son was almost too much to believe. So much so, that Zechariah doubted and questioned Gabriel;

Luke 1:18

“How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”

‭Other translations:

– how can I be certain?

– how will I know this?

– how can I believe this?

Zechariah is an external processor. His mind is racing while he speaks.He verbally  communicates a lack of faith that offends Gabriel.

Luke 1:19

“The angel answered him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.”

The angel did not introduce himself at the beginning, but now feels compelled to clarify to Zechariah:

– who he is

– where he stands

– what his mission is

Is God offended or at least not pleased when I respond to him with doubt? When I respond by sight and not in faith? Gabriel shared good news – actually great news, and was clearly expecting a different response from Zechariah.

Hebrews 11:6

“And without faith it is impossible to please God.”

Action Point: I will strive to please God by fueling and growing my faith by staying in the Word of God. Romans 10:17 “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”
