Discerning the Intentions of My Heart

I pray (Psalm 139) since my heart is deceitful (Jer 17). But what else must I do to guard my heart (Prov 4:23)?

Hebrews 4:12

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”

The Bible is God’s Word and so it is more than a book.  It is ‘living and active’ and daily reading of the Scriptures will allow the Spirit of God to discern my heart’s true intentions. Meditating on God’s Word like in Psalm 1 includes:

  • Reading
  • Reflecting
  • Responding

Without God’s Word I may have multiple blind spots and could be living in ongoing denial.

With God’s Word, I am increasingly aware of my need for mercy and grace from my great high priest (Hebrews 4:14-16).
