Galatians 6:9-10
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”
As Paul begins to close his long letter to the Galatians he exhorts them to not grow weary in doing good to all people. The “doing good to all” has an evangelistic bend, as Jesus clearly had when he said; “Let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your Heavenly Father.” Matt. 5:16 NLT
It’s here though that Paul makes an important clarification, “especially to those who belong to the family of believers”. (NIV)
Other translations state ‘household of faith’.
The priority people when it comes to doing good are the ‘family of believers’ and not just anyone / everyone.
This clarification is strategic and reinforces the ‘all in the family’ principle. When the people of God carry one another’s burdens (Gal 6:2) and tirelessly do good to the ‘family of believers’, the world can’t help but take notice – like ‘a city on a hill’.
After all, what is more attractive to ‘harassed and helpless’ people, (Matt 9:36) than a community that is intentionally caring for one another like a family?
Prayer.
Heavenly Father, grant me grace to creatively do good to those in ‘my faith family’ and not to grow weary in this. In Jesus Name, Amen!
