‘Defining a New Family’

Matthew 12:46-50

“While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.” He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”

Jesus had something to say about ‘family’. In the midst of some teaching and Q&A, his mom and brothers stop in for a visit. They were not quick to embrace his public ministry as they were slow to believe…

Mark 3:20-21

“Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat. When his family heard about this, they went to take him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.”

His ‘family’ at this point was not on board. It was those that were with him and who were embracing his teaching and who did the will of his Father in heaven that were his ‘new family’.

Jesus was not hostile to his mother and siblings but his public allegiance had now clearly shifted. This was the beginning of a ‘new family’.

There is good news as his mother and what looks to be most of his siblings would later believe – most notably his brother, James…

James 2:1

“My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of Glory.”

Prayer.

Heavenly Father, thank You for my new family. Help me to see family as You see it.  In Jesus Name, Amen.
