Genesis 39:4

“So Joseph found favor in his sight and became his personal servant; and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he owned he put in his charge.”

Potiphar bought Joseph as a slave and put him to work. But he saw (v 3) that the Lord was with him and that Joseph had ‘success’ in his duties so he promoted him to be his ‘personal servant’. 

Joseph did not start as a college educated mid level manager. He began at the bottom – the very bottom of Potiphar Corp. His ‘success’ in the little things at work were noticed and Joseph was ‘promoted’. Jesus would speak of this principle in the Parable of the Talents and also in…

Luke 16:10 

“Whoever is faithful in very little is also faithful in much, and whoever is unrighteous in very little is also unrighteous in much.”

Joseph was very faithful in the very little things and the favor of God was on him. There is no indication that he did this to ‘be noticed’ but the truth is that employers do notice ‘success’ in the small things at work. 

Potiphar noticed and ultimately put him in charge of everything that he owned.
