Joshua 6:17-18  “But the city shall be designated for destruction, it and everything that is in it belongs to the Lord; only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in the house shall live, because she hid the messengers whom we sent. But as for you, only keep yourselves from the things designated for destruction, so that you do not covet them and take some of the designated things, and turn the camp of Israel into something designated for destruction and bring disaster on it.”

God spoke through Joshua and gave a very clear directive. This directive would also be the pattern for Israel occupying the Promised Land.  

The ESV translates this as ‘devoted to destruction’. Most of life is either devoted to the Lord or devoted to destruction. 

This clear directive was designed to help God’s people ‘not to covet’. They were not to even consider what God had designated as ‘off limits’. 

Some may find this to be ‘legalistic’ but God’s clear directives are designed to bring ‘freedom’.He has our very best interests in mind.
